education

Planting seeds and nurturing budding minds for a better future.

As a mother of three, Helen knows first hand the importance of educating children and young people about gardening, the environment and where their food comes from–not only to benefit the health of the planet, but also their own mental well being.

In 2020 she began supporting a local primary and nursery school on the south side of Glasgow, which has over 700 pupils enrolled.

A self starter, she recognised the huge potential to help transform the school grounds and involve the wider community, connecting them to nature.

Helen now actively works with the teachers and pupils by enriching the curriculum, taking the classroom into the garden and exploring subjects including art, science, design, maths and geography, through gardening.

Not only does Helen provide teachers with guidance and knowledge to shape and direct projects from companion planting, to composting and saving water, she teaches the children to learn about the power of plants beyond sowing seeds.

Horticultural education provides the opportunity to make a positive impact. Not only do children learn to respect their environment and take responsibility, but gardening helps to improve resilience, encourage teamwork and improve communication skills while also boosting confidence.

Helen will be happy to discuss how your school or community group can implement a successful gardening programme, and will help to plan and deliver sessions, whether as a one off or for a longer duration. She is welcome to all ideas and always happy to chat, to get more people growing!

Without Helen’s expertise and passion, we would never have been able to have delivered our successful school gardening programme. She has gone above and beyond to transform the school gardens, excite and engage our pupils, as well as our staff, illustrating the beneficial impact gardening and cooking can have on the health of our environment and our mental health.
